Introduction
Kaleb A. Bearden is an Atlanta-based fashion designer and the founder of the label that carries his name. Entirely self-taught, he built his practice out of instinct, repetition, and an obsession with how things are put together. His work spans high-end outerwear, tailored garments, bags, and footwear, and draws its language from the American South.
Early Life
Kaleb Bearden was born March 12th, 2003, in Dothan, Alabama. Diagnosed with ADHD as a toddler, he spent his childhood drawing, not from reference but from imagination, pulling shapes and figures out of his head onto paper. That habit never left him. It became the foundation of everything he makes.
His introduction to design came sideways. In college, he started drawing logos for a friend chasing a rap career. The friend never took it seriously. Kaleb did. Seeing what he could produce, he stopped designing for someone else's vision and started building his own.
Work ethic came from home. He watched his parents commit to 12-hour shifts without complaint. His mother, Ladawnya Gray, owned and operated Merritt Wholesaling. It was his first real look at what it takes to run a business from the inside, and the reason entrepreneurship felt like an option rather than a fantasy.
Education and Training
Kaleb attended Fort Valley State University for one year, primarily to play football. Like most kids with an arm or a step, he had NFL dreams. What he actually had was a refusal to leave without doing something.
He was denied readmission after his freshman year due to his GPA. He considered appealing, then didn't. By that point he already knew what he wanted to build: not a degree, but a brand that would grow into a fashion house. School wasn't the road there.
The Work
In mid-2022, he sold his first design, a tee. It moved exactly one unit. Later that year came a pair of shorts, his first design to sell more than once. Neither made him money. Both proved the thing worked.
The garment he still points to is a brown full-zip jacket with a mask worked into the face of the hood. It was the first sample where the object in his hands matched the one in his head.
He founded Kaleb A. Bearden in Atlanta in 2022 and still works out of the city.
Philosophy
For Kaleb, fashion is an emotion you get to wear. It's one of the few mediums where a feeling can be constructed, assembled, and worn in public, and one of the few that lets him work in mosaic, building collections and capsules where individual pieces add up to something larger than any one of them.
The label is made for the South and for anyone who feels something toward its history. Anyone can wear it. It was designed with a specific place in mind.
